The syndrom of Exercice-Induced Collapse (EIC) is a limbs paralysis induced by strenuous exercices (5 to 15 minutes) which has been recognized in Labrador Retrievers.
Duringsucha crisis the rear limbs then become weak and unable to supportweight. In some dogs the rear limb collapse progress to forelimbweakness andoccasionally to a total inability to move. Most collapseddog aretotally conscious and alert.
Most dogs recover quicklyand arenormal within 5 to 25 minutes with no residual weakness orstiffness.Dogs are not painful during the collapse or after recovery.
Syndrom of exercice-induced collapse is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The frequency of carrier dogs is around 30%.
The EIC test allows an early DNA screening of this syndrom and to adapt the crossing in order to avoid its propagation within the race.
