Speciality Cardiology

Description : Myocardial degeneration resulting in a dilation of cardiac cavities and a thinning of the cardiac walls

Symptoms : Decreased cardiac contractility, exercise intolerance, weight loss, cough, respiratory difficulties, abdominal distension, muscular weakness, loss of consciousness, syncope, sudden death

Age of onset : The average age of onset is between 4 and 6 years

Examination : Echocardiography, Doppler, electrocardiography and/or radiography

Progress : Undergoing sampling. To date, 176 Irish Wolfhound samples have been collected including 18 affected dogs, 19 doubtful dogs (including 3 dogs affected by unknown cardiac diseases) and 131 dogs free of DCM. The average age of affected dogs within our cohort
