Spinning

Description:
Disease classified as an obsessive compulsive disorder. Current hypothesis: syndrome suggested to resemble partial seizures (without loss of consciousness) during which an abnormal electrical activity occurs in the temporal lobe of the brain (brain area involved in behaviour).
Symptomes:
Affected dogs spin rapidly in tight circles, more or less frequently, with or without apparent interest in the tail. Some cases may be associated with aggressiveness which is triggered without reason and/or growling against a person or an object, irrational fears or disorders of consciousness with an apparent disassociation of the environment (trance-like behaviour, hallucinatory fly-catching compulsions...).
Age d'aparition:
Puppies can be affected as early as few months, but the hormonal changes at puberty appear to be involved in the onset or worsening of this disorder.
Examen:
Neurological check-up
Avancement:
Undergoing sampling. The first genetic results would show a genetically complex disorder.
Collaboration:
Dr C. Escriou (VetAgro Sup, France), veterinary neurologist and team of Dr H. Lohi (University of Helsinki, Finland)

Renal Amyloidosis

Description:
Amyloid deposits in kidney
Symptomes:
Excessive water consumption, weight loss, fatigue. Progressive and ultimately fatal renal failure
Age d'aparition:
The age of cases is 2–12 years with a median of 6 years
Examen:
Definitive diagnosis can be made only by histological analysis on kidney biopsy or post-mortem sample of kidney.
Avancement:
Thanks to the important participation of breeders, veterinarians and dog owners, we have been able to collect 99 samples of Shar-Pei older than 18 months and histologically characterized for renal amyloidosis. Among them, 40 were diagnosed with amyloidosi

Symptomes:
Cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac murmur, breathing difficulty, exercise intolerance, fatigability, vomiting, cough, anorexia. The disease can lead to a fatal outcome for the cat, sometimes sudden death can occur without symptoms.
Age d'aparition:
The average age of onset is between 1.5 and 5 years
Examen:

Avancement:
To date, thanks to the involvement of the breeders and owners, 220 Sphynx samples have been collected including 49 cats affected by HCM, 13 cats affected by unknown cardiac diseases and 158 cats free of HCM. Thanks to the involvement of owners, 2 hearts w
